Cisco IOS server load balancing (SLB) feature is a Cisco IOS software solution that provides wire
rate IP server load-balancing on the Catalyst 6000 family switches. This feature is important for
scaling of Web services. A Catalyst 6000/6500 with Cisco IOS SLB provides network managers the
ability to balance services across numerous servers at very high speeds of packets per second. The
Catalyst 6000, through a variety of advanced SLB algorithms, can decide on a flow-by-flow basis
which server to send a TCP/UDP connection request to (and subsequent packets), and having
made the decision, will forward/switch the packets to this destination at hardware switching speeds.
The servers are represented by a virtual address and the clients direct their requests to this
address. Cisco IOS SLB currently uses “Dispatch Mode” only, and does not support Network Address
Translation (NAT) mode (also called “direct mode”) SLB switching. Depending on the length and
nature of each flow, Cisco IOS SLB running on the Cisco IOS software on the Catalyst 6000 family
switches performs SLB switching at speeds up to 15 -Mpps.
